Our Herstory

Women's Information Network (further referred to as WIN1) began in the fall of 1989, founded around a dining room table by a group of young women, with Karen Mulhauser at the head. They created WIN1 because they felt a lack of guidance from older women in their professional environments, while simultaneously recognizing an eagerness from more experienced women to offer mentorship. The organization aimed to create opportunities for younger women in various professional fields and successfully did so until its disbandment during the pandemic.

Impact

For over 30 years, WIN1 served as Washington, D.C.'s leading professional, political, and social network, dedicated to empowering young, Democratic, pro-choice women. It offered networking, mentorship, guidance, and hosted major events. WIN1 was a 501(c)(4) organization with over 1,000 members in the D.C. area, and maintained an office, staff, an Executive Committee, and an Advisor Council consisting of over 60 prominent former young women. This council was dedicated to guiding and supporting the next generation of Democratic, pro-choice women, as well as securing funding for women who needed financial support.

The Present

The Women's Information Network disbanded in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For five years, the organization remained inactive as social media and online networking platforms emerged, seemingly diminishing the need for a traditional information network. However, the current political climate has led the newest generation of young professionals in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area to seek guidance on navigating these significant societal shifts. As a result, there is a renewed desire from younger generations for support, and experienced women leaders are eager to provide it.

While the closure of the Women's Information Network was a significant loss, we are incredibly excited to announce the emergence of the Women's Intergenerational Network. This new iteration of the prior organization is dedicated to revitalizing our community by fostering a supportive environment for mentorship and career development. Through engaging networking events, valuable career-building opportunities, and insightful discussions with influential leaders, members will have unparalleled opportunities to connect, collaborate, and achieve personal and professional growth. Now more than ever, there is a desire to make in-person connections and physically engage with the community. This newest iteration of WIN addresses those needs by hosting dinners with mentors, connecting individuals in similar industries, and providing women the platform to be empowered and to empower others.  Whether you are a college student, an experienced professional, embarking on a new career path, or considering a career change, the Women's Intergenerational Network offers a welcoming and enriching space for women of all ages. We warmly invite those passionate about empowering women and cultivating meaningful personal and professional connections to express their interest in joining this exciting new endeavor. Together, we can open doors to a brighter future.
